About ILAMS

THE IBERIAN AND LATIN AMERICAN MUSIC SOCIETY

... A society to promote interest in the music of Spain, Portugal and the countries of Latin America.

ILAMS has been established in London by a steering committee of distinguished musicians and musicologists to promote interest in and knowledge of Iberian and Latin American music. It has been felt for many years that the rich musical cultures of these countries have been under-represented in our concert scene. The society endeavours to raise awareness of these cultures, and particularly their classical repertoires, by organising an active and varied programme of musical events of all kinds.

The emphasis is on enabling the members of the Society, and where appropriate the public at large, to enjoy live music. Members have the opportunity to hear both well known artists and young performers interpreting the Iberian and Latin American repertoires, and to experience the less familiar areas of those repertoires in live performance. The situation which currently prevails is that much fine and inspirational music from these parts of the world is rarely, if ever, heard in concert. The Society seeks to remedy this.

The Society also presses for the issue of recordings in those areas of the repertoire which are currently ill-served in this regard. It seeks to encourage the revival of works in genres in which it does not itself have the power to mount performances, such as large orchestral works, opera and ballet. It also seeks to encourage the premieres of new works which are deserving of public recognition.

The educational aspect of the Society's work has high priority. Members are invited to attend a programme of masterclasses either as students or observers in venues in London and elsewhere, and lecture-recitals on topics of great interest to the music lover. An annual International Mastercourse is organised, which takes place in the UK or abroad. The Mastercourse is for all instrumentalists, singers, conductors and lovers of the music of Spain, Portugal and Latin America. The courses include concerts given by teachers and participating students.

An annual competition is planned to take place in London, initially for pianists but subsequently also for other instrumentalists and singers, which will feature the Iberian and Ibero-American repertoires.

Members receive a Newsletter which will give details of the Society's activities as well as reviewing books, music editions and recordings. An academic journal is also planned in the longer term.

"There is scarcely any music in the world with a more distinctive profile than that of the countries of Iberia and Latin America - a coherent heritage and with many connotations in common, in which many people from different countries can share tastes in a sphere they feel as their own but which can also be linked to the music of the whole world. However, for a multitude of reasons this patrimony is insufficiently known or appreciated in many of the world's musical centres. To break down these barriers, contribute to everyone's greater understanding and appreciation, and give our music the dimension and worth it really has are the common aims to which we are committed."
