NOVEMBER 2022 | Clara Rodríguez | Piano Music of Teresa Carreño | Nimbus Alliance NI 6103

By RAY PICOT

The concert given by Clara Rodríguez this year highlighting female composers from Latin America, reminded me of her wonderful release of 2009 Piano Music of Teresa Carreño. I’ve very much enjoyed her subsequent releases, but this particular disc is a real gem and a pleasure to return to. If you’ve not already got in your collection I unreservedly recommend it.

Carreño (1853-1917) was a piano virtuoso and a composer, who was highly respected in her lifetime. Her music is very much of its time, and largely predates the nationalist movement that swept through the Latin republics in the early decades of the 20th century. She was admired by Liszt and other composers of her time and one can hear echoes of both Liszt and Chopin in her delightful music with perhaps more contemporary characteristics of Moszowski and Gottschalk (one of her teachers); this is attractive music that graced the salons and concert halls of Europe and Latin America.

The disc offers us a generous sampling of 15 well-chosen pieces from the 70 she wrote. However, it’s not all virtuoso music, as can be heard in the more contemplative Balada and two Elegies, which show another side of her naturally lyrical style. The Vals gayo is an attractive foretaste of the famous waltzes of her native Venezuelan successor, Lauro. The natural flare and empathy Clara Rodríguez has for this music is self-evident in this recording, who displays a light and alluring touch that helps make this recording such a pleasure.

By way of a postscript, to continue exploring the Venezuelan female icons of music in the company of Clara Rodríguez, look no further than her 2010 album Venezuela. In this release on Nimbus Alliance NI 6122, she has packed in 75 minutes of wonderful music which offers an amazing cross-section of 20th century pieces including works by Luisa Elena Paesano, María Luisa Escobar and Modesta Bor.
